Here are some 'Frequently Asked Questions' (and the answers)
Q: How fast is EVDO?
Answer: That will depend on what kind of coverage is available where you need it. Check the Verizon
EVDO coverage map and see what's available where you want service.
Make sure to look at "Broadband" coverage (it defaults to voice). Blue is
Verizon's high speed EVDO service.
Average Speeds
by type of Network:
1xRTT 50 ~ 100 kbps Download and Upload, bursts to 144 kbps
EVDO Rev-A 600 ~ 1400 kbps Download, bursts to 3 Mbps; 200 ~ 800 kbps Upload,
bursts to 1.8 Mbps
There
are no guarantees regarding speeds by either carrier. Your speed will vary
depending on both the quality of signal you receive at your device and
the bandwidth/load at cell tower your device connects to.
Average Latency
by type of Network:
1xRTT 300-900 ms
EVDO Rev-A 100-400ms
There
are no guarantees regarding latency/lag by either carrier. Your latency
will vary depending on both the quality of signal you receive at your device
and the quality of network along the route your connection follows, to
destination server.
Q: Is
Verizon EVDO "Unlimited"?
Answer: There
are currently no data or time limitations to Verizon's $59.99/mo EVDO
service, but there overage
charges for each MB used after 5 GB in a billing
month. In addition to reading the article on overage charges, you should
read the terms
of service before purchasing. Not sure how much 5GB is? check this
out: "What
does 5 GigaBytes get me?"
There is also
a 50MB plan
for $39.99/mo that is also subject to overage
charges. 50MB
is not a lot of data, and very few people would benefit from that plan.
If you feel you are one of the few who are suited to that plan's use, please
add to your order notes "prefer 50MB plan rate". NOTE: All 50MB plans
add $50 to upfront cost of the EVDO device being ordered,
regardless of contract term.
Q: Are
there any other fees involved?
Answer: In addition
to the monthly $59.99 fee, there will be varying state and federal taxes,
just as there are on your cell phone plan. Verizon also charges a $35 activation
fee (regardless if you have an existing Verizon Phone). If your billing
address is in California or Illinois, state sales tax may be charged for
device's full retail price, not its discounted price.
Q: Is
there a "Free Trial Period"?
Answer: Verizon
provides a 30 day trial for your EVDO service, but it is not "Free".
If you are not satisfied with Verizon EVDO service, you can cancel within
30days and not be subjected to $175 early termination fee. You will not
be shipping charges, and you may be charged for a partial month of service.
Q: Is
there an "Early Termination Fee"?
Answer: Verizon
provides a 30 day trial for your EVDO service, after the first 30 days,
any cancellation will result in an early termination fee that starts at
$175 and declines $5 for every month into your contract.
